Green Key: Environmental Certification granted to Caribe Hilton
San Juan, January 27, 2010 – On Monday, January 25, the Organización Pro Ambiente Sustentable (OPAS) granted its environmental certification to the Caribe Hilton, the first hotel to reach the Green Key distinction in Puerto Rico.
To achieve the Green Key distinction, a property must fulfill a list of environmental requirements as listed in OPAS’ criteria. Besides environmental demands, the criteria includes demands on policy, action plans, education and communication.
“Environmental education is fundamental for the Green Key distinction. Part of the criteria requires the involvement of employees, guest and suppliers. By receiving the certification, it helps attract the market segment seeking responsible hotels and tourism attractions,” emphasized Lourdes Díaz, National Green Key coordinator. She added, “Puerto Rico has at its disposition an international eco-label with offices based on the Island.”
The Green Key is a voluntary eco-label for hotels and tourism attractions contributing toward sustainable tourism by modifying and establishing sound environmental practices in all tourism sectors, including government authorities, suppliers, visitors and communities, among others.
At this point, the Green Key is established in 15 countries; a number of other countries are preparing to run the campaign. In Puerto Rico, OPAS is responsible for its implementation, as well as for the local Blue Flag Program and Eco Schools.
